TIMU redesign

The lead UX designer from Neudesic requested help from our team of graduate students with user research for their project management application TIMU. We were asked to create a research plan that focused on one feature of TIMU and provide recommendations in the form of a hi-fidelity prototype.

Team: Natalie Celmer, Arnel Jabile, Yosef Kran, Stephanie McNicol

Research Plan

The first method of research we decided to utilize was Jakob Nielsen's  "10 Usability Heuristics for User Interface Design" and take note of some of the most problematic violations of these heuristics. We found that differentiating between the user's home page and the project's home page was very confusing, and since this was the core of what TIMU was about, managing projects, we thought this would be the most important aspect to focus our research so we could find imrpovements for the user experience.

From there, we recruited five participants who were not familiar with TIMU to conduct a usability test. We sat down with users and asked them to navigation to their team home page. What we found is that it took them on average of 20 seconds to complete such a basic task. When we debriefed with our users they said that there was "a lot going on" and "it was hard to find" the page where users could manage their projects.

We noticed when we tested users up with our prototype, they found the team home page 5 seconds fasters than with the original TIMU design. See the interactive prototype below:
